About

I'm a freelance writer and historian of art and ideas based in Cambridge, UK. I specialise in the art and culture of Tudor and late medieval Britain and its later reception, with a wider interest in the relationship between images, objects, literature and music across time, as well as the contemporary craft of art writing.

I am the host of British Art Matters podcast, and a BBC New Generation Thinker since 2019. My reviews and cultural criticism appear regularly in media including BBC Radio and Apollo magazine. In 2021, I was shortlisted for the British Journalism Awards in the Arts and Entertainment Category, and I have appeared on podcasts including Not Just The Tudors, Talking Tudors and Evening Standard's The Leader.

I am an Affiliated Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Historical Society, and I am a Trustee of the Walpole Society for British art history. My first book, Tudor Liveliness: Vivid Art in Post Reformation England (Paul Mellon Centre and Yale University Press, 2023), was based on my PhD research at the University of Cambridge. My academic work has been published in leading scholarly journals, including Renaissance Studies, British Art Studies, Print Quarterly and Burlington Contemporary.

I am currently curating Tudor Contemporary, an exhibition bringing together historical objects and work by contemporary artists inspired by them, from February-April 2026 at the Heong Gallery, Downing College, UK.
